Mr Tunnock’s 80th Birthday

On behalf of our members David Morgan presented Boyd Tunnock with a set of crystal glasses and a bottle of  Glenmorangie for his 80th Birthday on 24 January 2013.  Tunnocks have been a great supporter of our Club for several years and we were delighted to mark this occasion and show our appreciation of his continued commitment to our club.

Haggis Curl – January 2013

Thirty two hungry curlers faced up in eight teams to contest the 2nd World Haggis Curling Championship, organised by South Lanarkshire Wheelchair Curling Club, at Hamilton Ice Rink on Monday 21st January.

After seven ends the winning team was announced by umpire Ian Archer. It was skipped by Jim Sellar, and was composed of new club member David Bain, Steve Sutherland, and, reigning World Champion Jan Dryffe of Crawfordjohn.
In a play off for individual winner the Champion Jan retained her title.

Club President David Morgan thanked the sponsor Mike Shannon of Dam’d Delicious the Lanark Butchers who farm their own herd of Aberdeen Angus at Thankerton. Mike had supplied a haggis for each of the winning team, and a superb (dam’d delicious) plate of haggis, tatties, and neeps for all the curlers in the Ice Rink restaurant.

After the exciting, sometimes hilarious event, members started looking forward to a repeat competition in season 2013/14. Haggis should beware!

Cadzow V SLWCC – January 2013

Last year’s Presidents of Cadzow Club (Jimmy Maxwell), and SLWCC(Arthur Bell), had agreed with their committees to set up an inter-club contest. Brian Douglas, a member of both clubs, had come up with the suggestion. So on Jan 17th a new challenge event took place at Hamilton Ice Rink.

Two teams from each club played a ‘no sweeping’ game, and the winners of both were SLWCC. Paul Webster and Jim Sellar skipped the two winning foursomes.

After the game Jimmy produced a superb new trophy and presented it to Rosemary Lenton of SLWCC. Cadzow had commissioned a Moffat based craftsman, and his extraordinary sculpted pewter wheel with curlers, all set on a slab of red Dumfries sandstone is truly impressive. Both clubs look forward to a return match next season, but Jimmy Maxwell threatened: “Next time we’ll play a sweeping game!”
